Vacation

What better way to spend a vacation day than playing with robots, making a computer game, or making a LEGO movie? Our vacation day programs give kids a mini course in one of these three classes. Kids have a great time and make friends as they explore their creativity. Click on the Monthly Calendar link to check if there are classes coming up.

LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT Robotics Engineering

This exciting class teaches you how to build and program the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT robots, the coolest robot available. You will use your new skills to meet such challenges as clearing objects off a board, driving through a maze, or beating your opponent at LEGO® Sumo, a BBB favorite.

You don’t need any experience with robotics or programming to begin your robotic adventure. Students who took our robotics After School Class can take this for a more solid foundation and to work with the new NXT system or move on to the Advanced Robot Challenges. All robot classes will be taught with the LEGO® Mindstorms® NXT 1.0 robot. The robot system includes the programming language, LEGO building system, and touch, light, sound, and ultrasonic sensors.

*Robots are for use by students in class only, and no parts may be taken home.

Educational benefits: Students will be introduced to object-oriented computer programming concepts (“drag & drop”commands), if/then/else statements, and use of variables; developing logic and problem-solving skills, requiring attention to multiple details and procedures.

Computer Game Creation

If you think playing computer games is fun, think what a blast learning to program your own games will be. In this class, we’ll teach you how to make an exciting car racing game in which you can design the layout, and do the programming. Using drag and drop programming, you’ll create an exciting, professional looking game you and your friends can play. In the last class, you’ll get a CD with the software (Windows PC only) and your game, so you can keep making games when you get home.

You can keep making games when you get home as the software and your game will be put on a CD for you to take home. If you want to see what it would be like to be a game designer, or you just think computer games are fun, this class is for you. You must be experienced using a computer to take this class.

Educational benefits: Students will be introduced to object-oriented computer programming concepts (“drag & drop”commands), if/then/else statements, and use of variables; developing logic and problem-solving skills, requiring attention to multiple details and procedures.

Stop Motion Animated Movie-Making

In this class, students make stop-motion animated movies using Lego® sets and characters. They film the movie by following a story, add titles, credits, music and their own narration. Students will be given a CD with their movies, so they can view them at home with friends and family. Bring your imagination to this class! Please be aware theat students work in pairs in this class. Also we have a strict policy regarding movie content: no violence!

Educational benefits: Students will use organizational skills while being introduced to concepts of animation using computer animation and movie-making software, the various parts of a movie, stages in production including planning, filming and basic editing techniques.
